Makah Water Quality Standards

Public Hearing Notice
and
Request for Comments

The Makah Indian Tribe has been granted treatment as a state by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for purposes of administering Federal Clean Water Act Section 303 Water Quality Standards on trust lands of the Makah Reservation. The Makah Tribe has prepared draft water quality standards and is now offering them for public review prior to submitting them to EPA for approval.

The Tribal water quality standards provide a mechanism for managing and regulating the quality and use of the Makah Indian Tribe’s waters by establishing the water quality goals for specific water bodies, and providing a legal basis for regulatory controls. The standards are also designed to establish the uses for which the surface waters of the Tribe shall be protected.

Because the Tribe has “treatment as state”, it is subject to federal regulations on public participation. In order to comply with these requirements, the Tribe mailed a notice to a list of interested and affected parties and is soliciting comments from the public. A public hearing on the proposed standards will be held 45 days from this notice.
